5/27/15 – Discerning God’s Will

Written by Carlton L. Arnold

“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!  How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!”   Romans 11:33

All Christians have experienced stress when trying to figure out God’s will in their lives, especially, for the more important things in life. If you think about how much God loves you then the last thing He would like to do is cause more stress in your life. There is a way of living the Christian life in God’s will without stressing about it.  There are two fundamental questions that people have when discussing God’s will:

1.        1.. How can I discern God’s will for my life?

2.      2.  How do I know when He is telling me to do something and that it is not me talking to myself?

The most important thing to know about God’s will is that God is in control, and that He always has authority over your life.  This pleases me, because He knows everything.  My finite mind has a hard time trying to understand how God can know everything.  But He does!  He knows all about my past, present, and future.  He even knows when I will disobey Him in the future!  And, He still loves me unconditionally.

His decisions surrounding my disobedience will always be in accordance with His will for my life.  I may not like the consequences of my disobedience, but God can create opportunities that I may know more about Him…like His unconditional love.  He can take anything that I do of my own freewill, and create a path for my life that will be in His will.  This aspect of God is unsearchable and beyond figuring out.  The following are two required actions for a Christian to discern God’s will.

Always be reading the Word of God...the Bible.  No matter how busy you are, you cannot afford not to read the Bible.  You must read some of it daily. God uses His Word to show you how to live for today.  Never do anything that violates the Word of God.  This is so important in discerning God’s will.  Never stop reading the Bible!

Ask the Holy Spirit to be clear when it is God telling you something.  Specifically, ask him to show you the flesh in you versus the leading of the Holy Spirit.  When people want to know that it is their flesh leading them to do something, God will tell them.  This requires humility. You are nothing – forget about yourself – it is not about you.  Your Christian life is all about God and others.  The greatest commandments are to love God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love others as you love yourself (Luke 10:27).  That verse sounds like a pretty good summary of God’s will for your life.  Now, go and love God and others.  Do not let yourself become so engrossed in you and your life that you miss God’s perfect and wonderful will for your life!
