8/5/15 – Your current body will return to dust

Published: Wednesday, 05 August 2015 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:7

God says that He created you from dust and to dust you will return.   Millions of people have studied the physical body, and billions of dollars have been spent to find solutions to the diseases of the body.  As soon as the body is born, it begins to die.  Some humans are preoccupied with the desire to keep their bodies young in appearance, but their body will still die.   Many people spend huge amounts of money to try to live longer or look younger.  However, the Bible and the most atheistic person in the world are in agreement that the physical body will die and return to dust.

God declared that our bodies would die because of sin.  He did not want us to live with the guilt and shame of sin for an eternity. God told Adam “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”  Genesis 2:17  Please understand that the spiritual meaning of “death” or “to die” is to “become separated.”  When you die physically, you are separated from this world and your loved ones.  In addition, the Bible uses a word meaning “to sleep” for Believers who die.  Death is not a final word on your life.

God’s purpose for our bodies is to be able to interact with the physical world.  The five basic senses of our body are windows as to how we interact with the world.  What is fascinating, from God’s creation of humans, is that our physical bodies reveal the condition of our souls to other people.  This is a major aspect of how we live our lives and interact with others.  Anger, depression, joy, humility, and all other soul characteristics are seen by others through our physical bodies.  Non-verbal behavior represents a huge percentage of how we communicate.  We can try to hide our feelings, but all of us will become exhausted in putting up a false front.

The Bible is clear that your earthly body is temporary.  It is referred to as a tent that is considered a temporary structure. “I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.”  2 Peter 1:13-14

This temporary body that we now have is to be the dwelling place for your soul and your spirit on this earth.  In the case of a Believer, the body will be the dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.  This is a strong point emphasized by Jesus Christ.  The Believer’s body is also referred to the temple of the Holy Spirit.  “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The body contains some of the natural drives that God has given us.  The motive for sexual activity is a major part of God’s command to replenish the earth.  However, we all know that this God-ordained desire has been abused and misused by humanity resulting in all manners of sin.

Since this body will die, God has declared that one day He will resurrect our physical bodies.  Surprisingly, He will do this for both Believers and unbelievers.  The resurrected body will be discussed next week.
