12/23/15 - Your Life: Quietness in your soul

Published: Wednesday, 23 December 2015 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

“My heart is not proud, O Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.  But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.  Psalm 131:1-2

These are powerful words to calm your soul.  Read through them slowly.  Think about your soul reaching a state of stillness and quietness.  We all need this.  It is something that every human being should experience.  God designed us to have this need to quiet our soul.  Otherwise, pride and arrogance will live continually in our soul negatively impacting our relationship with others. The verses above will, hopefully, bring a soothing effect to your soul.

Your soul can rest secure, like a child with its mother, when you and God are one within your soul.  Pay attention to the needs of your soul.  Your soul is who you are to others.  You can call it your personality that consists of your emotions and thoughts.  Also, our decisions communicate to others who we are and how we are feeling.  I can think of a child who is worrying their mother to the point that the mother cannot show the love and care for that child because her own soul is disquieted.  The mother is almost like a different person, because she is allowing a temporary situation to dictate the condition of her soul.

Our lives can be filled with busyness and activities.  One thing that we all should consider is the real human need for quietness of our soul.  Don’t become enslaved to thoughts of what we have accomplished or what we possess.  Let’s not become dictated to by schedules of “great matters”.  Rather, still yourself so that God can comfort you and give you peace that is beyond this world.

God intended for us to humble ourselves with others, so that there is a peace that passes all understanding.  There are other people who have gone through what you are going through or even worse things.  We do not need to be so proud or haughty that we hide our true feelings.  This is especially true to those who we love and are near to us.  Why is it that we cannot be open and honest with others?  Especially, with those who are dear to us?

There is also our need to depend upon God who has given us blessings and riches beyond our imagination.  We can call upon God when we are at our lowest to bring people into our lives that we need for those special moments.  God will provide for you.  He does not like to see any of His children disquieted in their soul.  At the same time, others need the stillness and quietness of your soul to see that there is hope in this world, the hope that comes from God through Jesus Christ who is in you.

As a disciple of Christ, be at peace at all times by trusting God completely.  Others will see Jesus in your soul and will want that same quietness for their soul.  The song, “Silent Night” is all about quieting the soul: calmness and peace.  You may want to consider this song as an all year song and not just at Christmas.  May you experience the Holy Spirit quietness in your soul that God gives us through His Son, Jesus Christ.
