1/13/16 - God planned for Christ to be in the Old Testament to help today’s Believers grow spiritually

Published: Wednesday, 13 January 2016 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.  Luke 24:27

Jesus said this to two men after His resurrection to explain who He is as the Messiah.  He used the Old Testament (OT) to validate what He said about Himself.  The New Testament (NT) had not been written.  This means that Jesus Christ used the Scriptures (OT) to support His claims. This is phenomenal and crucial to healthy spiritual growth.

There is a tremendously large spiritual link that God intended between the Old and New Testament. It is imperative for a Believer to obtain the true and complete meaning of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through using both the OT and NT.  I believe that God looks on the Old and New as one Testament.  This may be a difficult truth to accept and make a part of your active, obedient, and living life for Christ.

Think about this spiritual truth: Jesus Christ in the OT makes applications of NT spiritual truths possible.  I believe that the full spiritual impact of the Bible cannot be grasped by the average Christian without this spiritual relationship of the two testaments.  If and when you begin to see your life in the lives of OT saints, your spiritual capacity and yearning to become more Christ-like will grow exponentially.  With this in mind, read carefully the following Bible passage from the NT that references several OT events.

For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:1-5

If you read the above Bible passage slowly, a “surprising spiritual” question should come to your mind.  Why did God use Christ in the Old Testament?  And, the answer is “Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.  1 Corinthians 10:6

I hope you are as astounded as I was when the Holy Spirit finally spoke to me that the “rock” provided the spiritual drink needed by Believers to stay alive.  And we are learning this through an Old Testament event.  God purposed for Christ to be a part of every Believer’s life regardless of when they lived.  For example, I believe that it was Christ that walked and talked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the evening in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:8).  I believe it was Jesus Christ who visited Abraham and Sarah in the form of a man to announce Sarah giving birth to Isaac within a year (Genesis 18:1).  And there are countless more OT events that must include Jesus Christ.  As a personal Bible study, do a search on the word “rock” in the OT.  Its reference to our Savior, our Lord, our provider, etc. is amazing.

This is all perplexing since Christ was not born until 2,000 years later.  But God had already provided all of the necessary events to learn and apply spiritual truths through the work of the Holy Spirit.  One last part of the Bible passage is 1 Corinthians 10:5, and it is a sobering spiritual truth:  Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.   The nation of Israel failed and continued to remain unfaithful on a repeated number of occasions.  This sounds too close to the manner in which Believers live their lives today.  I think we need to learn more of the OT as spiritual truths lived by real people as opposed to “just a history lesson of the Jewish nation.”

NOTE: You can find much more detailed info at  You will find a complete documentary of the OT in two forms: video lessons and narrative form.  Your spiritual life will change dramatically if you study these sources.  If you have any questions, send me an email: This email address is being protected from spambots.
