4/13/16 - Why should I fear?

Written by Carlton L. Arnold

This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:17-18

A child who is abused would have a difficult time learning, even as an adult, what love is.  Fear can damage a child for a lifetime.  Fear can affect every future relationship for a child.  Fear will probably have a negative impact on their relationship with their spouse and children.  It will damage relationships with other relatives and friends.  Fear causes significant damage to the mental health of a child.  It is not impossible, but it is made more difficult for an abused child to show love to others when they are adults.

This discussion about abused children can be applied to adults.  God considers us as “his children”.  Many times in the Bible, Believers are referred to as the children of God.  In Romans 5:18 the term “Abba Father” is the same as for our calling on God by saying, “Daddy.” As adults, we experience so many negative events in our lifetime that our minds and emotions are damaged.  We cannot maintain healthy relationships, because of the fear of being hurt again and again.  This is the fear that results when the things of this world pile up on us.  Satan, who currently has dominion on this earth, has used fear as his major tactic to cause Believers to neglect the love of God.

The verses above direct our attention not to this world, but to the kingdom of God.  One day, God will judge all of earth.  As Believers, we do not have to fear that judgment, because we are like Christ.  Knowing the love He shared by dying on the cross, allows Believers to love and live without fear.  There is no fear in love.  In fact, perfect love (God’s unconditional love) drives out all of our fear.  As Believers, we all probably need to work on making this truth a reality in our lives on this earth.

Not only do we not have to fear God’s judgment, but also we can live on this earth with confidence.  The Oxford Dictionary defines confidence as follows: “the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust.”  By relying on God and focusing on His love for us as Believers, this world cannot present anything to us that should cause us to fear.

Please think about what you are worrying about or fearful of happening.  Your next thought should be, “I do not have to fear anything on this earth, because God loves me unconditionally.”  If you do continue to possess fear in your life, then you do not trust that you are like Jesus.  You have given Satan an opportunity to negatively impact all of your relationships.  This is an Absolute Truth about living life on earth.  God encourages Believers to have strong and healthy relationships with Him and others.  Allow the perfect love of God to consume your every thought and action.  Do not be afraid of anything on this earth.  As a child of God, you have no basis for being fearful.
