5/11/16 - The world is not a place to put your hopes

Published: Tuesday, 10 May 2016 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy.  Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the plots of evildoers.  They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.  They shoot from ambush at the innocent; they shoot suddenly, without fear.  They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, “Who will see it?”  They plot injustice and say, “We have devised a perfect plan!”  Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.  But God will shoot them with his arrows; they will suddenly be struck down.  He will turn their own tongues against them and bring them to ruin; all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.  All people will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done.  The righteous will rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him; all the upright in heart will glory in him!  Psalm 64:1-10

If we could gather one person from all of the ages of humanity, they would probably argue that their time of living was the worst ever for humanity.  Today, we can say the same thing as we hear and see all of the evil done in this world.  We can easily come to the conclusion that things are out of control.  There appears to be no way out of the spiral of evil that seems to possess the world.  We are not even looking for a Savior that could fix the broken monetary systems, governments, and countries that appear out of control.

The preceding paragraph is the outlook of life of someone who has become reliant on the things of this world as the answers to the problems of humanity.  Many Christian believers possess this worldview, because they have neglected to make God a part of their everyday life.  It is not a simple prayer to God to fix things.  I do not even think that is the way that God would have us pray over the conditions of the world today.

Psalm 64 (repeated in its entirety above) discusses the two possible worldviews for Believers.  A believer can become so involved in identifying and correcting the world’s problems that their Savior is humanity.  Humanity will come to its senses and make the world easy to live in.  As long as Satan has dominion over this world, this will not happen.  Satan loves to introduce chaos, controversy, lies, false hopes, empty governmental solutions and vain philosophies.  The history of humanity is full of examples of these failures.

God has the answer.  A Believer who can take their eyes, mind, and heart off this world and put it on the eternal God will find the peace that this world cannot give.  They will find the hope that only God can deliver.  They will be surrounded by the love of God that permits them to love the unlovely in this world as the strongest kind of witness that others can actually see coming from a God who loves them unconditionally.  The peace, hope, and love will only come when God begins to judge this world.  He is clear in His Word that He will judge all nations and all peoples.  Our peace, hope, and love will not come from a feeling of revenge, but will come from knowing that God gave His only Son so that we will not be judged.  Hopefully, there will be a movement among Believers that will transform our worldly minds into eternal living.  Only then will we experience the true glory of God!
