5/18/16 - Be a disciple and be free

Published: Wednesday, 18 May 2016 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

John 8:31

It appears to be a normal activity for human beings to want to know the final, real, “for sure” truth about life.  Social Media (Internet, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) is frequently considered as the final truth.  However, web sites have been developed to expose “hoax” generated on the Internet.  The verse above is what the Bible says is the “real” TRUTH.  It is a verse where the rubber meets the road in your spiritual life.

Most Believers do not take the time to think about being a disciple of Jesus.  Jesus says that you should “hold to my teaching.”  If you do, then you are really his disciple.  Well, this means that you must know the teachings of Jesus.  And, that means that you should be reading and studying the Bible.  Without the teachings of Christ in your life, you live your life based on worldly teachings and this is where the next part of the verses comes in.  Some of the teachings of Jesus you will find in the Bible are the following:

“No one can enter the kingdom of God unless his is born of water and the Spirit” – John 3:5

“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. – Matthew 6:1

“Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moth and rust destroy”. – Matthew 6:19

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.”. – Matthew 6:25

“Anyone who loves his father and mother more than me is not worthy of me”. – Matthew 10:37

When you have reached a certain level of understanding about the world, you will discover that the things of this world make you a slave.  We are bombarded with the lies of the world.  The world is currently under the dominion of Satan.  That means that the systems and philosophies of the world are lies.  Anything that takes you away from God or makes Him less than first place in your life is built on a lie.  And, the more Satan can get you to believe the things of this world, the more enslaved you become to Satan.  Truth becomes murky and can change constantly.  There is no Absolute Truth. A lie believed by a Christian is a source of hypocrisy and a definite lack of being a witness for God.

The next part of the verse says that you will be set free from the worldly lies if you know the truth.  The truth comes from the teachings of Christ.  At the age of 30, God gave me a deep desire to study His word and remove worldly things as a priority in my life. Several times when making a decision, I could see the lie of the world and the life in Christ.  Over the years, the distinction between worldly lies and Godly truth has become clearer.  Along the way, the teachings of Christ continued to open my mind to the truth.

Truth is a real and joyous experience in a Believer’s life.  Being set free is an experience that is unique and overwhelming.  Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!  Seek Him in all that you do.
