7/6/16 – Run the spiritual race of encouragement

Published: Wednesday, 06 July 2016 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Hebrews 12:1

Are you tired and run-down?  Do a lot of little things keep coming up that keep you in a state of constant worry?  Has something big knocked the air out of you?  Do you not have any energy in your arms or legs to do anything?  Does your mind tell you that everything is useless and nothing matters?  Does your body feel heavy, and does not want to move?  Do you feel like you are flat on the floor with people walking all over you?  Welcome to a world controlled by Satan.  Satan works hard to make your life miserable.  But, the simple spiritual truth is that we are more than conquerors because of Jesus Christ.  There is no reason to allow the world to enter into our lives and drag us down.

The verse above clearly states that you, as a Believer, have a race to run on this earth. A race has its own tempo.  I have participated in many races.  Sometimes my body would explode with energy that would astound me.  Other times, it would be “one foot in front of the other” just to reach the finish line.  In all the races, I committed to finish the race regardless of abounding energy or being barely alive when I crossed the finish line.  All Believers are in a spiritual race while living on this earth.  The verse also gives you tremendous encouragement.

I do not want to interpret the verse above other than to say that “a great cloud of witnesses” can see everything that is happening in your life.  Who is in this great cloud of witnesses?  Everyone that you can think of in heaven: God, Christ, Holy Spirit, Angels, and loved ones who have already gone to heaven.  By knowing this, we are encouraged to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that entangles us in this world.  The cloud of witnesses is cheering us to take our eyes, our minds, and our hearts off this world and to put them on God.  Slowly, but surely, the weights of this world will begin to drop off and grow smaller and smaller with each passing moment.  As Believers, we want to be so free of the entanglements of this world that we want to spiritually run as hard and as fast as we can.  We want to know that there are millions that are cheering us on to persevere.

I want you to consider one other thing about these verses.  One of these days, you will be a member of the great cloud of witnesses.  Everything that was by faith while you lived on this earth will become a reality in heaven. You will see your loved ones on this earth struggling and straining to try to get through one more day.  What would you like to tell them from your position in heaven? I think you will want to yell and scream to “keep going, you are almost there!”  What else would you want to tell them?  “Satan has lost and God has won!”  “Jesus Christ is waiting for you at the finish line.”  “You cannot imagine what God has prepared for you.”  These are words that I believe are being repeated to all Believers.

Why wait until you become a member of a great cloud of witness.  Run your race now with encouragement for other Believers. The spiritual race we are running involves the energy of encouraging others.  No Believer has the time to stop and say, “It’s too hard!” Or, “I am so tired.”  All Believers need to be encouraging others to persevere and finish the race.
