8/4/16 – How God is involved with worldly governments

Published: Wednesday, 03 August 2016 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.  The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.  Romans 13:1-2

Were you aware that the Bible spoke so clearly about God and governing authorities?  I was amazed when I first found these verses toward the end of the book of Romans.  As Believers, we need to be familiar with these verses so that our focus and energy does not become distracted from God and His Word and worldly governments.  There is nothing wrong with participation and voting in worldly governments.  However, we should not forget God and His role in all the governments that have existed, currently exist, or will exist in the future.

Everyone is writing and talking about what is happening in the world, and, specifically, America.  We are fast approaching another change in the Executive Branch of our government with the election of a new President.  The verses above make it clear that God establishes every government in the world.  This includes good and evil governments.  Why would God allow an evil government?  It is usually because of God’s judgment of the nations.  He uses evil governments to judge the people of that nation.

In the Old Testament, God used the evil Egyptian government to enslave the descendants of Jacob.  God also judged Israel (the Northern Kingdom), because the Israelites had destroyed their relationship with God by forgetting Him and His Word.  They did all kinds of evil including child sacrifice to pagan gods.

Every Christian should know that God is in control even though the world is full of evil.  He permits Satan and his demons to cause destruction in this world for God’s judgment to be completed.  Human governments have practiced genocide.  America continues to practice abortion.  God must judge the nations and individuals, and He will!

When Christians become emotionally involved in some of the governments of this world, they should keep in mind that God has placed the governing authorities in control.  God’s will continues with local governments and all authorities that the government uses to establish and maintain control of people.

Regardless of who wins the next election for President or who is appointed on the Supreme Court, Believers should praise God and thank Him for working His will in the governments of the nation.  We should always be praying for God’s will to be working in our government whether it is to execute His judgment or to establish His Kingdom on this earth.
