Your Life: Do you live in the darkness or the light?

Published: Wednesday, 26 February 2014 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.  See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you.  Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” Isaiah 60:1-3

You have probably heard several sermons on Believers being the “light of the world”.  You are the “light” that someone needs to see.  The Light has come to you in the form of a Creator who has created and sustains everything, in the form of a baby in the manger, in the form of a Savior who has made a way for you to have a personal relationship with God.  This Light has enveloped you so that others may see what they can’t see even with all the lights in the world.  This Light is LIFE as God originally intended for every man, woman, and child.

“The glory of the Lord” is usually described as bright white light.  I believe this glory is what surrounded Adam and Eve in the Garden before they sinned.  When they sinned the glory left them.  They could see each other’s nakedness with lust in their heart.  They realized that their impurity separated them from a holy God.  This is why they hid.  They did not want the light of God to see them.  Their sin is the darkness that is spoken of in the verses above.

Darkness covers the earth.  There are more people living a life for them than for God.  A life lived like this is “thick darkness”.  I am including myself as well as many Christians in this condemnation.  Today’s Believers are not living the life that God intended.  The world is full of darkness.  It is interesting that most of the thick darkness occurs on earth at night and in dark places.  There is a spiritual truth that, just like Adam and Eve, sinful man wants to hide from God.  But God never runs out of grace for there is a great hope that God has for you as a Believer…”the Lord rises upon you.”

God wants you to see that that His glory is slowly enveloping you.  As you live your life on this earth as a Christian, the Holy Spirit will lead you to make changes in your life that will reflect Jesus Christ…who is the Light of the world.  Every change you make will increase the glory around you.  This Light is Joy.  This Light is Peace.  This Light is Truth.  This spiritual truth is confirmed in the New Testament:

And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.  2 Corinthians 3:8

This is a tremendous spiritual truth that I hope sinks deep into your mind.  This is God’s purpose for your life.  I strongly recommend that this truth be a part of your daily living.  Consider that every day you live, God is putting people, incidents, and interactions into your life that are intended for you to lose some of your “darkness” and to gain some of God’s glory (“light”).  I got chills while I was writing this, because this is such a direct interaction between you and the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Lastly, you need to realize that, as you grow to be more Christ-like, you will expose the darkness of this world and that involves people.  Do not expect to be welcomed by the darkness that covers other people (family members, friends, etc.)  The darkness hates the light.  The lust and greed in this world wants to be protected for what it proclaims, “Become rich, live in a luxurious house, drive an expensive car, and have anything you want that will make you happy.”

Being happy in the darkness is not much fun, because the darkness will never allow you to become content with what you have.  You will always want more and more until you are no longer the unique, special person that God created.  You have become part of the masses in the thick darkness.  All you can see is a mass of people moving around in the darkness not knowing where to go and always bumping into one another.  Darkness is not a “happy place.”  I don’t know why any Believer would want to continue to live in the darkness.  Get out of the thick darkness now while the Holy Spirit is leading you!

Be prepared to give a reason for the Light that has arisen in you because of whom you trust and believe, the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  People will come to your light of life, joy, peace, and truth.  They will want to leave the darkness when they see the glory of the Lord surrounding you.
