Your guide to the most compelling Christian books of all time

God and Men: No-Holds-Barred by Carlton Lee Arnold

God and Men: No-Holds-Barred by Carlton Lee Arnold offers an interesting twist on Christian devotionals. The author covers how to address many issues men encounter through Scriptural references accompanied by commentary, although many of the topics contain information applicable to women as well. Throughout the book, lies an underlying question: Are you living according to the standards of God or the standards of the world?

The book is broken into 5 sections allowing easy access to topics of interest: Foundations of Being a Believer, The Beginning of a Growing Faith, Maturing in the Faith, Topics Related to Men, and Future Expectations. Each section is divided into chapters, further dissecting section-topics. For example, the Maturing in the Faith section contains a chapter urging men to protect their families from Satan’s attacks. He reminds the reader “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy … (John 10:10).” Men are to be not only the spiritual leader of the family but also the spiritual projector. He cautions allowing Satan a foothold in our lives through anger, depression, sadness, or retrieval of your peace and joy or the over-engagement in activities that cause you to neglect the study of God’s Word. Satan is in the business to destroy relationships with God, children, and the love between a man and wife.

God and Men: No-Holds-Barred specific topics related to men include chapters regarding anger, pornography, idols, and husbands loving their wives, fathers disciplining their children, church attendance, and accountability. The author declares a Christian man should never become angry and provides instructions on eliminating anger. Men engaged in pornography are pointed to what Jesus said about adultery: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:27-28).” Arnold says Jesus definition of adultery defines what is known as pornography in today’s world—the explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual gratification.

He cautions men against loving the things of this world—cars, houses, careers, sports, TV, and their toys—rather than the pursuit of loving and building relationships with God, their wives, and children.God and Men: No-Holds-Barred addresses many issues men face and provide a roadmap for them to apply Scripture to their daily lives in a friendly, conversational manner.
