12/31/14: The Lord is Watching You

Published: Wednesday, 31 December 2014 Written by Carlton L. Arnold

And the Word of the Lord says:

The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.    Psalm 121:7-8

This is a very comforting Bible passage.  The Lord is watching over you.  He will keep you from all harm.  Many of us know people who have had to go through some rough times, and it would be fair to ask what “harm” does God keep you from.  Christians experience much physical harm on this earth.  But, God is always concerned about your spiritual health.

Physical suffering, as rough and despairing as it may be, is something that God sees as temporary.  The Bible clearly speaks of our earthly bodies as something that will wear out.  The Bible calls our bodies “tents”.  Tents begin to wear when you use them.  The Bible also says that when we go to Heaven, we will receive a body that is indestructible.  Physical suffering is a consequence of living on this fallen world.  He does not like to see any of His children suffering, but His son suffered on the cross so that we may have eternal life.  Other Bible passages say that God considers our earthly lives as very brief – here in the morning and gone in the evening.

This is why I believe God’s idea of “harm” is spiritual harm.  He will keep you from Satan and all of his evil demons.  Look back over your life and try to identify some times when God protected you spiritually.  I remember one in my life when a friend of mine physically removed me from a path of oncoming sin.  It could be a pastor’s sermon, a Bible teacher’s lesson, a friend who tells you the truth about the way you are living your life.  This is when God has intervened and protected you from spiritual harm.  We need spiritual protection much more than physical protection because physical is temporary while spiritual is for an eternity.

This watching over you is a 24 X 7 job for God.  I like the sound of that.  There is a downside that someone may think about.  If God is watching over you 24 X 7, then He sees everything you say and do.  This can be unnerving, or it can be very comforting.  I hope in your life you find great comfort in God watching over you.  The evil side of this world cannot get to you when God is watching you.
