4/8/15 – Your life should please God

Written by Carlton L. Arnold

Finally, brothers, we earnestly ask and exhort you in the Lord Jesus that, as you received from us how you should conduct yourselves to please God—and as you are conducting yourselves—you do so even more.  For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.   1 Thessalonians 4:1-2

A major part of a Believer’s life is spent reflecting on being Christ-like in all of their affairs.  The way we conduct our lives, as reflections of the spiritual realm may be the only testimony many people will receive about God.  Only by daily study of God’s Word can one know what are the actions of Christ that should be a part of their lives.  For example, Jesus told a group that if someone asked them to walk a mile, they should walk two miles.  At the time of Christ, a Roman soldier could force a Jew to carry something for a mile.  Obviously, this was not well received by the Jews.  Jesus went further with obedience to the Roman solider by saying that you should walk two miles.  One mile was expected while two miles would have made an impression on the Roman solider.

This is the theme of all of Christ’ instructions.  They consisted of denying self and making a sacrifice for others.  This is the exact opposite of the philosophy of the world today.  “SELF” is the major component of people’s lives.  We are overwhelmed with ads, news media, movies, magazines, etc. about how you should look, how you should think, what you should own, and where you should go to please the “SELF” in you.  It is extremely hard to even identify that self is sitting on the throne in your life telling you how you should live.

Christ wants to be on the throne of your life.  As you conduct yourself in your life, you receive the instructions and commands of Christ through the Holy Spirit.  Only in this way can you begin to eliminate the stronghold of self in your life.  I am afraid that most Christians live from day to day with no thought of the commands of Christ.  Discover what those commands are in the Bible.  Make them a part of your heart and mind.  Your behavior will change from “SELF” to Christ as you experience the freedom that the commands of Christ provide, as opposed to the world.  Do not become a slave to your “SELF”.  A Christian controlled by the self is the most disgusting, most selfish, most arrogant, the angriest, and most jealous person as seen by others.  God wants to remove these things from your life.

It should become apparent to you if you are living your life for your “SELF” or for Christ.  When you realize that it is the self in you that controls you, you will realize that you are a slave to bad habits and selfish attitudes.  Only after putting the commands of Christ in your life will you experience freedom, joy, and peace.  You will also be the witness that God has called all Believers to be.
