5/13/15 – Humility means living your life under God’s Authority

Written by Carlton L. Arnold

So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.  1 Peter 5:6

Humility is not an action or an attitude.  It is a decision to put your life under God’s authority in all that you do.  The humble person does something for someone else thinking only of the other person.  The thought of self is repugnant to humility.  Humility is a recurring theme throughout the Bible because the Lord Jesus was full of humility during his three years of ministry.

Humility is extremely difficult to maintain in the world today.  Everything screams for you to make sure you are recognized when something is done.  Many people want to make sure their name is included in those who helped with a project; and, it had better be spelled correctly.  People who try to act out humility are seen by others as focused on themselves.  If you even think that you are humble, it is assured that you are not expressing the humility of our Lord.

Pride is the opposite of humility.  Jesus never did anything by putting himself first in a relationship.  Jesus ever thought of himself and what he was doing.  He said that He only did what the Father told him to do.  There is no pride or self in that.  Jesus placed Himself under the mighty hand of God.  As I write this I think of all the times that I had to hear others say something about what I did.  I would not leave it alone.  I had to hear one more time something that I said or did that impacted others.  That is pure pride with an ugly SELF in control of my life.

Humility requires a submission to all other people.  When you meet someone, you are thinking only of him or her and what he or she are saying.  Your thoughts are consumed by what that person is going through.

To be a servant of others, God says to place yourself under His authority.  Don’t think that you know what to do without God’s input.  We are told to sacrifice who we are in numerous places in the Bible.  Selflessness is a major aspect of a Spirit filled mature Believer.

Finally, humility is a person being led by God to do the things that give God the glory.  In His infinite plan, God uses submission to authority (humility) as a major revelation of who He is to others.  It is interesting that there is a reward for forgetting about yourself and being under God’s authority – God will exalt you in due time.  In other words, God will use your humility to accomplish His will.  He will say, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
