Example of one of the chapters from About Men:

52        Your Eternal life         Heaven or Lake of fire?

And the Word of God says:

“The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.” - Obadiah 15

Wow!  This is a real cheer me up verse.  And it is full of joy for Believers, but, not so for unbelievers.

I believe that the “day of the Lord” is not a literal day but extends over one thousand years at least.  It is packed full of events that will occur as part of the end times of our earth.  One major event is the Second Coming of Christ.  A fundamental truth about Christianity is that the Lord Jesus Christ will return to earth.  This truth is repeated over and over in the Bible and is one of the most accepted facts about the future.  No one knows the date or time other than God.  Many people have tried and are still trying to predict when this cataclysmic event will occur.  But, no one will be able to.

The “day of the Lord” can actually be a lengthy amount of time as the Bible is not clear on the length of certain events.  For example, one event that most Believers are looking forward to is called the “rapture” (see 1 Thessalonians 4 for more details.)  Basically, in the twinkling of an eye, every Believer will be “caught up” (Greek word for rapture) in the air with Jesus Christ.  Some think that this will usher in the end times, but there may be other events that do that.  After the rapture, there is a seven-year period during which a one-ruler government will be established on earth.  The Bible does not speak of how much time elapses between the rapture and the seven-year period.  The bottom line is that when it comes to end times, the timing of events becomes very hard to predict.

In the verse above, the day of the Lord is near.  The way I look at it is that for every day that passes, we are one day closer to the day of the Lord.  Also, note that this includes all the nations of the world.  Events will occur that will impact the entire earth.  Of course, there will be judgment.  This happens near the end of the day of the Lord (see Revelation 19.)

God will judge every single person one at a time.  Those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will have the blood of Christ covering their sins when God judges them.  In other words, your sins were judged by God when Christ was on the cross.  Therefore, Believers will pass into heaven as sinless human beings.  Revelation 19 speaks of the events surrounding this judgment.  It says that Believers will not face the second death.  The first death was your physical death.  You will not die again.

However, unbelievers will go through the first death (physical) and the second death (separation from God forever).  Each unbeliever will stand before the Great White Throne and give an accounting for the deeds of their life.  For every “good” thing that the unbeliever mentions, God will show them some “sin” they did.  The unbeliever can stand before God for as long as he wants giving an account of his earthly deeds, but God will always find unforgiven sin in their life.  God cannot allow a sinner into heaven.  After the unbeliever has exhausted everything that they thought would get them into heaven, they will bow down at the name of Christ realizing the sinner that they are, and finally recognizing who Christ is.  God will then cast them into the lake of fire (the second death) to be separated from God for eternity.

If you think your deeds are good enough to undo your sinfulness, then you do not understand Revelation 19.  Read it carefully.  Only the blood of Christ is sufficient for your sins to be removed from you forever.  Get to know who Jesus is today.  Know that God has made you as righteous as Jesus by making a way for all of your sins to be judged and for you to receive righteousness from God.  This is how someone gets into heaven: by not doing anything themselves and trusting in the blood of Christ.  Is this what you are doing?  Or, do you have your own way to get into heaven that includes all the good things that you have done and, therefore, you do not need a Savior like Jesus Christ?  Let me say that you are going the wrong way on a one-way street.

Today, make a decision to trust Jesus Christ to bring you into heaven because of His blood that He shed on the cross.  Your life will never be the same.
