Carlton,
Every so often God uses LCV to 'hit the nail on the head'. We are in Canada right now being sucked in to a vortex of non-believers. I awoke this morning thinking of how difficult it is to hold ourselves up in these surroundings. The contrast from our bubble of Forsyth county, FBC and CCA, the girls' school, is difficult.
Thank you for your words. Be blessed!

I have always valued and enjoyed your emails and the way they relate to us here and now, as well as the class you taught (step by step). I would surely be interested in your interpretation/explanation of how God's word should apply in our daily lives. James has always been one of my favorite books of the bible. I used to have the entire book memorized, due to a contest in Tampa back in 1980, which I won by being the first person to quote from memory the entire book verbatim on stage.

God and Men: No-Holds-Barred
Not For a Devoted Catholic

According to the information on the back cover, the objective of this book is “to enable Christians (especially men) to personally apply specific Bible verses to their personal lives.” The book attempts to answer the question, “How does the Bible describe a Real Christian Man?” My first thought was: “Who is Carlton Lee Arnold and what are his qualifications for this project?” I went to his Web site,[...] to find the answers. He is a Protestant (Baptist) with a Masters degree in an unrelated field. His knowledge of the Bible was apparently acquired over years of private study while attending Baptist church services in his locale. These qualifications are similar to mine, except that I am a devoted Catholic. I’m not sure if Mr. Arnold intended his book to be read by someone like me, but, nonetheless, I agreed to read the book and write this review. His verses come from the New International Version of the Bible. Being Catholic, I prefer a Bible translation that has the Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat for Catholics, such as the St. Joseph Edition of the New American Bible. The verses I quote in this review are from this latter translation.

I was disappointed to see that of the fifty-seven specific Bible verses used in this book, only nine were from the four gospels. Granted, there are many, many good verses that could have been chosen from almost any page of the Bible. However, Jesus Himself had many important things say to us men and these should have been given more emphasis. Examples would be what Jesus had to say about love, humility, help for the poor, and forgiveness. Regarding love, Arnold chose to use a verse from the first letter of St. John. It is an excellent choice: “God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.” But what did Jesus Himself say?
